Carob (E); St. John's bread (E); Algarroba (P). Although the fruits are edible, rich in sugar and protein, and a source of alcohol, the carob is probably not cultivated in Panama. the seeds are substituted for coffee. Molasses is made from the seeds in Cyprus. A fruit decoction is used for catarrh. For early symptoms of mononucleosis and hepatitis, Panamanian doctors may prescribe AROGON, 85% carob flour, 15% antidyspeptic starch (!). The seeds are said to have been the original jeweller's carat.
