Black nightshade (E); Hierba mora (P); Kaburgia (Cu); Pintamora (P) (Fig. 282). The berries are reputed to be both poisonous and edible (!). The leaves and tender shoots, boiled like spinach, contain about 5% protein. The juice is regarded as alterative, cathartic, diuretic, and hydragogic, and is used for bladder and kidney pains and in viruloent gonorrhea and leprosy. The leaf is chewed to cure ulcers of the mouth and tongue. The plant is also used for baths for pregnant women. In the Choco, it is used for diseases of the spleen and liver, also to wash wounds.
